i saw vampire weekend with my sister. as a favor from one sibling to another (her attending party cancelled last minute).

like a real live j crew commercial with the front half of a ska band. bass player was a SICK dancer, though.

The Men were kind of a bummer Saturday night. Kind of boring stage presence, nothing from before "Open Your Heart" and the new songs were merely ok. I'll still check out the records but I think I'm done with seeing them live. They're definitely not the same band as they were a year ago when they pulled through town and absolutely killed.

Ty Segall was amazing though. He managed to get a bunch of Pitchfork dorks slamming and chanting "Oi!" to not one but TWO run throughs of "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap."

Saw Iceage tonight, but got in late because I was using a friend's extra ticket. We missed Ooze and Skrapyard even though we got there 30 minutes after the first band was supposed to start. Semi-positive of the situation was that I had some time to kill in Estelle's, which was playing Shoot 'Em Up, which I hadn't seen in forever. I got in right at the part where Clive Owen delivers the baby and instead of cutting the umbilical cord he shoots it.

Milk Music played and I'm about 90% sure they also played Saturday before The Men but they were so boring that I'm not actually completely sure. Iceage only played three songs from the LP but most to all of the new ones killed. Like last year they went through the first four songs with the singer also playing guitar and were fine, but once he took off the guitar and just concentrated on singing the energy level kicked up about five notches. It's not like the second guitar really adds anything so I'm not real sure why they stay with that arrangement. They also, despite all being 17 or 18, still dress like a bunch of middle class dads.

Worked/saw Refused on Thursday night. I caught the last 75% of the set and it was really good. I never thought they were the amazing/revolutionary band that a lot of people do but I am a fan. It's been about ten years since I last saw Dennis perform with (I)NC but he was still prancing and dancing around just like then. Super high energy set despite it being probably 110 degrees inside the room.

Something like 4,000 people showed up; I honestly didn't expect that many but hey, good for them.

i wish i could see swans on this tour. haven't heard the new one yet, but last year they were unreal. got lost in a trance for like 10 minutes and was completely overwhelmed by the music.

It's not as good as "My Father..." but it's still worth hearing. I just picked up tickets for their show here last night.

saw guided by voices last night. huge bro contingency (and lots of bad reports about it, my friend screamed at least three dudes throttling her around). gbv was incredible, though. 2nd best performance i've seen them? lots of new stuff (which was sooo much harder live), perfect old songs. dude played for at least two hours.

seeing guided by voices tonight.

The hardcore double show on a Sunday/turn around and work a double Monday then extra hours all week killed me but it was still a super fun show. Bob Mould killed too but staying out late the day before four double shifts in a row also killed me. I saw a couple of bands at Riot Fest on Sunday but mostly walked around and drank free beer. Jesus & Mary Chain sounded great, will check them out more and the Stooges were great as ever. I skipped Tenement last night to watch TV and don't really regret it all that much.

Saw Devo again last night and thought it was the exact same set as Milwaukee two years ago (with the added bonus of "Come Back Jonee" with Debbie Harry) it was still fucking amazing. Perfect mix of new songs, deep cuts and the hits. God I love that band.

The show was in the Chicago Theater so that was weird but it's a really cool old building. I felt like I shouldn't be allowed in. Blondie did half of a "No Sleep 'Till Brooklyn" cover and used their encore to play all of Frankie Goes To Hollywood's "Relax." It was weird.

Mission of Burma is probably the only band where they can make 75% of their set list post-reunion material and people won't mind. I saw them again Saturday night and that was easily the ratio but the performance and song selection was great that it was totally worth the $20.

I saw Marky Ramone's Blitzkrieg on Saturday and it was awesome. My voice was shot at work yesterday and is still kind of rough today, so oops, sorry to all the callers.

I've been to more shows in the last week and a half than the previous three months.

Mind Spiders/The Novice at the Empty Bottle - They sounded kind of thin with just one guitar instead of two but the new songs sounded great.
The Marked Men/Bad Sports/Tenement at Club Garibaldi (Milwaukee) - I wish I could see this bill every day. I don't think I'd ever get sick of it
The Arrivals and other bands at Township - I never want to think the phrase "I don't remember the last time I saw The Arrivals" ever again.

That's it. I haven't been able to get out much lately but hopefully that'll change soon.

Night Birds killed on Friday night. They played a handful of new songs that sounded great, most of the old hits and then ended on back to back covers of "I Just Want To Have Something To Do" from the Ramones and "Takin' A Ride" from The Replacements.

It blew my mind.

Seeing guys with actual straight edge tattoos (in 2013!) will probably never not be hilarious to me.
