It's good to have a bit of brightness around the eyes from time to time - and not just to hide the telltale bags and dark circles that show the world you had a good time last night. Sometimes it should be just for the pure heck of it. When applying white liner, 'draw a line stage by stage, not all at once', says Abby Ireland, international make-up artist for Laura Mercier.
A sharp pencil and a steady hand also make this a little easier but mistakes are easily rectified. Before the white shadow, 'always prepare with a neutral colour - this will stop your make-up creasing and keep the colour true.' For a lasting effect, 'add the white shadow in layers by pressing the colour into the eye'. For the evening, keep the lines sharp and use a reflective cream shadow. For daytime, use a matt shadow and gently smudge the liner with a cotton bud. Finish with a lick of black mascara to open those eyes right up.
