BT to boost on-demand content

BT aims to increase the programming on its on-demand service to 5,000 hours by the end of the year.

Marc Watson, commercial director of BT Vision, told the Guardian's Changing Media Summit today that it plans to expand the service to include more niche content including motoring or cooking.

"There is no upper limit on our service. I'd like to see 5,000 hours of content," he said.

He added that BT is looking at introducing ad-supported services and is experimenting with different formats.

"There are certain types of content people are willing to pay for, like sport, movies and adult programming, but there is much more niche content that would be better to offer on an ad-funded basis."

Mr Watson said that the BT Vision platform has been designed in a way that will allow the development of new features, which could include allowing users to go online and choose what they want to download.
