New music: Spank Rock - Energy

After five years, hip-hop mavericks Spank Rock are back with this Can-sampling taster from their brilliantly titled second album

It's been more than five years since Spank Rock – fronted by MC Spank Rock, aka Naeem Juwan – released their debut album, the delirious, gonzoid hip-hop of YoYoYoYoYo. Produced by XXXChange, who went on to work with the Kills and Kele Okereke, it's an album bursting with ideas, old-school samples and digital drum claps competing for space with Juwan's energetic flow. Since its release, Juwan has kept himself busy appearing on albums by Amanda Black, N.A.S.A. and Mark Ronson. On Tuesday, details emerged of the follow-up, the excellently titled Everything Is Boring and Everyone Is a Fucking Liar, due in September. Featuring production from Boys Noize, Pharrell Williams, XXXChange and Chris Rockswell, the announcement came with a little aural accompaniment in the shape of Energy, which ditches synthetic sheen to sample Can's Vitamin C. "I need new energy," runs the chorus, which may explain the delay.

Completely off-topic, but: Mods, please can you stop using music players which auto-play when I arrive at the Music Blog homepage? It's really, really irritating.

Meh. Sounds like it should be on the sound track of a mediocre comicbook adaption.

I think you mean Amanda Blank not Black.
I'm sure it's just a typo though right?

Way to murder CAN. Sounds like the singer of The Walkmen doing an impression of Nick Cave over a Mark Ronson Versions take on the vitamin C rhythm.
