Leeds Guide

This mammoth site contains around 10,000 pages, representing a local what's on magazine. The main content is reviews and event listings, so efforts were made to imitate some aspects of print design without simply aiming to recreate its print design on the web.

In programming terms, the site features some rather special tools - the Food Finder uses a combination of AJAX and JSON to run a complex query returning real time results based on user input on restaurant preferences. It also features a complete staff-facing CMS (written by me) and an external one used by clients to update their profiles within the sites.

An obvious risk (some might say consequence) of magazine/newspaper designs is information overload. By introducing the 'promo' blocks pictured at the top, I broke down content into manageable chunks. Bold colours help with separation of content and smart recommendation schemes and related articles keep users browing for longer.
